A porous adsorbent includes pores having a pore diameter (Dm) of between 1 nm and 14 nm and an oxygen adsorptivity, measured at +20.degree. C. and 1 bar, of at most 10 Scc/g. This adsorbent is used in a process for adsorbing at least one gaseous compound contained in a gas mixture containing several gaseous compounds of different polarity. Preferably, the gas mixture to be separated or to be purified is chosen from mixtures containing oxygen and nitrogen, particularly air, mixtures containing carbon monoxide and hydrogen, and hydrocarbons, especially olefins, advantageously, the process is of the PSA or VSA type.

Ein poröser Adsorbent schließt die Poren mit ein, die einen Poredurchmesser (Dm) haben von zwischen 1 nm und von 14 nm und ein Sauerstoffadsorbiervermögen, gemessen an +20.degree. C. und 1 Stab, von höchstens 10 Scc/g. Dieser Adsorbent wird in einem Prozeß für das Absorbieren mindestens von von einem gasförmigen Mittel benutzt, das in einer Gasmischung enthalten wird, die einige gasförmige Mittel der unterschiedlichen Polarität enthält. Vorzugsweise wird die getrennt zu werden oder gereinigt zu werden Gasmischung von den Mischungen gewählt, die Sauerstoff und Stickstoff, besonders Luft, die Mischungen enthalten, die Kohlenmonoxid und Wasserstoff enthalten, und Kohlenwasserstoffe, besonders Olefine vorteilhaft der Prozeß ist von der PSA oder VSA Art.
