Pigmentation of human skin and/or hair is promoted by administering to individuals in need of such treatment, advantageously topically, an effective tyrosinase activity-stimulating amount of at least one 6-substituted pyrimidine 3-oxide having the structural formula (I): ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 and R.sub.2, which may be identical or different, are each a hydrogen atom or a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl radical; and R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, which may be identical or different, are each a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkyl radical or, when taken together, form a heterocycle with the nitrogen atom from which they depend, with the proviso that, when R.sub.3 and R.sub.4, taken together, form a piperidino ring, then at least one of the radicals R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 must be other than a hydrogen atom.

O pigmentation da pele e/ou do cabelo humanos é promovido administrando aos indivíduos na necessidade de tal tratamento, vantajosamente tòpica, uma quantidade atividade-estimulando do tyrosinase eficaz ao menos de um 6-substituted pyrimidine 3-oxide que tem a fórmula estrutural (i): ## do ## STR1 em que R.sub.1 e R.sub.2, que podem ser idênticos ou diferentes, são cada um átomo do hidrogênio ou um C.sub.1 - radical C.sub.12 alkyl; e R.sub.3 e R.sub.4, que podem ser idênticos ou diferentes, são cada um C.sub.1 - radical C.sub.12 alkyl ou, quando feito exame junto, dá forma a um heterocycle com o átomo do nitrogênio de que dependem, com o proviso que, quando R.sub.3 e R.sub.4, feitos exame junto, dão forma a um anel do piperidino, então em menos dos radicais R.sub.1 ou R.sub.2 devem estar diferentes do que um átomo do hidrogênio.
