Benzoazepines of the following formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.1a, R.sup.2, R.sup.9k, L, Q, X, Y and Z are as described herein, and analogs thereof are provided which are useful in stimulating endogenous production or release of growth hormone and in treating obesity, osteoporosis (improving bone density) and in improving muscle mass and muscle strength.
