A multi-bipolar configured electrode array and means to uniquely position
said array within the scalae of the human cochlea is described. Said array
is inserted into the scala tympani, scala vestibuli or both, by a surgeon.
The electrode array may be pre-formed to lightly hug the modiolar wall of
a scala so as to position the electrodes in close proximity to the
cochlear spiral lamina and spiral ganglia in the modiolus. Mechanical
features within said array allow the surgeon to further position said
array against the modiolar wall of the scala, post insertion, and to
mechanically retain such positioning of said array. Such positioning is in
close proximity to surviving neural sites in the spiral lamina and/or
spiral ganglion cells in the modiolus to efficiently stimulate functioning
auditory neural elements. The multi-bipolar electrode configuration
achieves a high degree of spatial selectivity, thus improving the
implantee's speech percepts.
Een multi-bipolair gevormd elektrodenserie en een middel worden bovengenoemde serie binnen scalae van het menselijke slakkehuis uniek om te plaatsen beschreven. De bovengenoemde serie wordt opgenomen in scalatympani, scalavestibuli of allebei, door een chirurg. De elektrodenserie kan worden voorgevormd om de modiolar muur van een scala licht te koesteren om de elektroden in dichte nabijheid aan de spiraalvormige dunne laag van het slakkehuis en spiraalvormige peesknopen in modiolus te plaatsen. De mechanische eigenschappen binnen bovengenoemde serie staan de chirurg toe om bovengenoemde serie tegen de modiolar muur van scala, posttoevoeging verder te plaatsen, en dergelijke het plaatsen van bovengenoemde serie mechanisch te behouden. Dergelijke het plaatsen moet in dichte nabijheid aan overlevende neurale plaatsen in de spiraalvormige dunne laag en/of spiraalvormige peesknoopcellen in modiolus goed werkende auditieve neurale elementen efficiënt bevorderen. De multi-bipolaire elektrodenconfiguratie bereikt een hoge graad van ruimteselectiviteit, waarbij de toespraak van implantee wordt verbeterd percepts.
