A method for preparing a non-fibrous porous material essentially consisting of one or more hydrophilic polymers and/or pharmaceutical medicaments comprising forming an aqueous solution, sol or gel comprising one or more hydrophilic polymers and/or pharmaceutical medicaments, freezing the solution, sol or gel and extracting the frozen water selectively using a hydrophilic organic solvent being miscible with water at a temperature below 5.degree. C. at which temperature the solvent is not able to dissolve the frozen solutes, leaving the non-fibrous material in a solid, porous form.
