A D-mannitol derivative selected from the group consisting of a compound of formula ##STR1## pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof and where applicable or appropriate pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 and R.sub.4 are the same or different and may each independently be selected from among alkyl and aryl (i.e. aromatic including aromatic like) groups. The D-mannitol derivatives may be used as HIV aspartyl protease inhibitors.

Un dérivé de D-mannitol choisi dans le groupe d'un composé des dérivés acceptables de ## du ## STR1 de formule pharmaceutiquement en et où pharmaceutiquement les sels acceptables applicables ou appropriés en, où R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3 et R.sub.4 sont identiques ou différent et peut chacun indépendamment être choisi parmi parmi des groupes d'alkyl et d'aryle (c.-à-d. aromatique comprenant aromatique comme). Les dérivés de D-mannitol peuvent être employés en tant qu'inhibiteurs de protéase d'aspartyl d'HIV.
