Phosphonomethylated poly-vinylamines which contain as characteristic structural elements units of the formula ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl or ##STR2## and X is hydrogen, an alkali metal, ammonium or one equivalent of an alkaline earth metal, are obtainable by phosphonomethylation of polymers which contain N-vinyl-amide or vinylamine groups and are useful as detergent additives and water treatment agents.

Phosphonomethylated poly-vinylamines-vinylamines que contienen como unidades estructurales características del ## del ## STR1 del fórmula donde está hidrógeno R.sup.1, C.sub.1 - C.sub.6 de los elementos - alkyl o ## del ## STR2 y X es hidrógeno, un metal alcalino, amonio o un equivalente de un alkaline-earth-metal, es obtenible por el phosphonomethylation de los polímeros que contienen los grupos de la N-vinilo-amida o del vinylamine y es útil como agentes detergentes del añadido y de aguas del tratamiento.
