An apparatus for varying the phase of the camshaft in the combustion engine of a motor vehicle has an adjuster which is connected to the camshaft and is operable to adjust the phase of the camshaft prior and subsequent to starting of the engine. To this end, the adjuster is connected with a hydraulic drive system which can operate the adjuster while the engine is idle. Once the engine is started, the drive system receives pressurized fluid from the lubricating circuit of the engine. Prior to starting of the engine, the drive system receives pressurized fluid from a source other than the lubricating circuit or from a source which is provided in addition to the lubricating circuit. The other source is preferably the hydraulic circuit of the power steering system (such as a speed-sensitive power steering system) of the motor vehicle.

Un apparecchio per la variazione della fase dell'albero a camme nel motore a combustione di un autoveicolo ha un regolatore che è collegato all'albero a camme ed è operabile registrare la fase dell'albero a camme anteriore e successivo ad avviarsi del motore. A questo scopo, il regolatore è collegato con un sistema di azionamento idraulico che può fare funzionare il regolatore mentre il motore è al minimo. Una volta che il motore è avviato, il sistema di azionamento riceve il liquido pressurizzato dal circuito di lubrificazione del motore. Prima del cominciare del motore, il sistema di azionamento riceve il liquido pressurizzato da una fonte tranne il circuito di lubrificazione o da una fonte che è fornita oltre che il circuito di lubrificazione. L'altra fonte è preferibilmente il circuito idraulico del sistema di direzione di alimentazione (quale un sistema di direzione velocità-sensibile di alimentazione) dell'autoveicolo.
