A highly selective process is described for preparing 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene which comprises reacting a naphthalene hydrocarbon selected from naphthalene, methylnaphthalenes, dimethylnaphthalenes, trimethylnaphthalenes, polymethylnaphthalenes or their mixtures with one or more benzene hydrocarbons selected from benzene, toluene, xylenes, trimethylbenzenes, tetramethylbenzenes, pentamethylbenzene and/or hexamethylbenzene, under at least partially liquid phase conditions, in the presence of a zeolite belonging to the structural type MTW and optionally in the presence of a methylating agent.

Een hoogst selectief proces wordt beschreven voor het voorbereiden van 2.6-dimethylnaphthalene die reagerend uit een naftaleenkoolwaterstof bestaat die uit naftaleen, methylnaphthalenes, dimethylnaphthalenes, trimethylnaphthalenes, polymethylnaphthalenes of hun mengsels wordt geselecteerd met één of meerdere benzeenkoolwaterstoffen die uit benzeen, tolueen, xyleen, trimethylbenzenes, tetramethylbenzenes, pentamethylbenzene en/of hexamethylbenzene, in minstens de gedeeltelijk vloeibare faseomstandigheden, in aanwezigheid van een zeoliet dat tot het structurele type MTW behoort en naar keuze in aanwezigheid van een méthylerende agent worden geselecteerd.
