A silane copolymer is described which is usable, for example, as an
ingredient of cosmetics for skin, hair or the like; obtainable by
polycondensing one or more organic silane compounds having a hydrophilic
group represented by the following general formula (I):
R.sup.1.sub.(3-m) Si(OH).sub.m A--B (I)
wherein m represents 2 or 3, R.sup.1 represents an alkoxy group, a hydrogen
atom or an alkyl group, A is a connecting moiety and represents a
methylene group or the like, and B represents a hydrophilic organic group
with one or more silane compounds represented by the following general
formula (III):
R.sup.2.sub.n Si(OH).sub.p Y.sub.(4-p-n) (III)
wherein n represents an integer from 0 to 2, p represents an integer from 2
to 4, n+p.ltoreq.4, R.sup.2 represents an organic group in which a carbon
atom is directly connected to the silicon atom, and Y represent at least
one group selected from the group consisting of an alkoxy group, hydrogen
atom and siloxy group and when 4-p-n is 2; and optionally further reacting
the resulting copolymer with one or more silane compounds represented by
the following general formula (V):
R.sup.3.sub.3 Si(OH) (V)
wherein, R.sup.3 represent an organic group in which a carbon atom is
directly connected to the silicon atom. A method for producing the same is
also described.
